#019: Generative Art, Lushsux, and Hackatao
Welcome to the NFTDrops newsletter!
This week we will break down the generative art process, touch on big news from the NFT space last week, and provide a spotlight on the artist duo Hackatao.
Here we go!
Generative Art
The generative art process is integral to the current state of NFTs.
Countless collections employ artists who create a script with the style of art they are looking for, and then run the script to produce any number of results. Most collections end up with 10,000 or more generative collectibles.
The hype surrounding so many NFT projects these past few weeks is reliant on the developers responsible for creating the art in collections like Bored Ape, World of Women, Cool Cats, and CryptoPunks. Collectors are going crazy for avatars with cool, customizable traits that randomly manifest at mint.
Most projects design their code so that a base avatar with a normal background can be built upon by adding "traits": necklaces, eyewear, hats, cigarettes, clothes, and more. See below: different collections with varying styles of attributes.
Some creators find success by overloading avatars with traits across the drop, so that the original piece is almost hidden with so much bling. Others choose to incorporate these traits sparingly, with each add-on augmenting the rarity of the individual collectible.
Aside from collections of 10,000+ metaverse avatars, generative art has more traditional artistic applications as well (at least as traditional as NFT artwork can be).
For example, Art Blocks provides artists with a platform to generate works of art less like avatars and more like paintings one might display in their home. Perhaps on a large screen??
In this iteration of generative art, artists still create a process using code. A script runs to produce art that fits the mold of the collection as a whole. Attributes of these collections, typically in the range of 500 works of art, include varying color palettes, sizes, shapes, and other nuances within the works. These collections also tend to have more traits. Check out all of these below from The Blocks of Art!
NFT Drops Recap
Art Blocks paced OpenSea's rankings with high volume across Curated, Factory, and Playground drops. Big name artist collabs and an increase in drops powered sales all week.
Grammy Award nominated singer songwriter Alan Blacc and 3D-artist Daneil Poschinger dropped a collab collection called Social Dilemma on Nifty Gateway on Sunday. They dropped 8 Editions of 10 in auctions and a #1/1 in an auction. Social Dilemma is about the ubiquity of technoligy and how social media and new technologies change the way we see and interact with the world.
lefty OUT there, a multidisciplanary artist, Tom Yoo, a painter and sculptor, and La+ch, a music producer, dropped a curated collection on Nifty Gateway on Sunday. All other works sold out, with #1/1 auctions going for $18,888 and $7,777 respectively.
Xsullo dropped a collection on Makersplace that focused on the role that technology plays in our everyday lives and how it has become progressively more integrated. Both limited editions sold out, and the #1/1 Timed auction went for 8.8ETH ($24,000)!
